"I’m worried about the major negative impact on our community. Water, electricity, more traffic congestion, and how this will impact our local schools."
"Hate to lose our mall. Loss of jobs, a community gathering spot, and loss of a convenient, local place to shop or just go for a walk."
"I'm not opposed to "reimagining" the mall, but what's proposed is GROSS!!"
"Thank you for creating this watch group to pay attention to the details and hold the developers accountable."
"Intriguing development process but tragic we will be basically be losing the original Hillsdale Mall. Would strongly urge a slow, deliberative process on all of that. Once it is done, it cannot be undone!!"
"Concerned about surrounding neighborhoods and the negative impact this new development will bring - increase traffic congestion, lack of adequate parking, oversized structures, lack of stores/goods for the community."
"Very concerned about losing so much retail in favor of more office space which is empty across the street. Housing will look nicer than parking lot but concerned about more parking seepage into the Lanes"
""I think it's a shame to get rid of our only mall. It's small and comfortable."
"I’m in favor of updating but this gross neglect of the community and focus on $$$ per square foot has the risk of leaving many empty spaces that don’t add to the culture of San Mateo."
“I am not happy about this. I live on 30th Avenue. It is a nightmare already. Speeding up and down the street. 28th and 31st avenue have speed bumps--we will also be getting a stop light on Hillsdale Blvd. So my block will be a total disaster. Police put up a speed sign one time. That is a waste of time. Right back to the same stuff. So sad money talks.”
“So I have many concerns, but mainly three: Major traffic congestion, especially during rush & school hours. Loss of retail, where to shop besides online. Loss of so much employment for all mall workers.”
“I am concerned that the High-density Hillsdale development is not addressing properly the increased traffic, power outages, and water scarcity that has plagued California.”
Too many businesses are going by the wayside & in their place More Expensive housing, more tech. companies, & very little affordable housing, I am sure. This, of course, is a sign of the times --A sad time, indeed, where Money is "King," & old favorites fall by the wayside. I have no idea how any of us can change any of this, or what I, or others have to say will make any difference. The "Powers that Be" are in charge, and I can only hope that the changes coming will have some heart.”
"Builder claimed that they conducted a survey of 8000+ people, and the result was favoring the project. I do not think my neighbors were included in the survey. I think the city council should make sure that we, who are most affected by the project, are heard.
